I
was excited to get into my own scope building project after checking out
the other great telescopes built by many observers and was especially
inspired by the efforts of my friend Mel Dawson. He has built three
scopes; 4" Carton & 5” Refractors along with a fantastic 10" Newtonian
Reflector. This scope that is being built by me isn’t my first- I
constructed a 14.5” f/7 Newtonian back in the early 1980's while living
in New Orleans East. However, I wanted to build one and one day while
browsing eBay for bargains I happened upon this 4" f/8.6 f/l Jaegers
achromatic doublet, in near mint shape, mounted in its original cell. I
placed a bid on and won it on May 5, 2010. My original idea was to build this and
mount it on a CeleStar 8 fork mount that was designed for an 8” SCT .
But to do that would have required getting a wedge and tripod, so I decided to mount it on an old Edmund EQ head I bought some time ago.
Another view of the 4 inch Jaegers lens. It was won by me and bought
from eBay merchant
AdAstra4ync.
The build begins around this objective.
