To
begin the construction of the Right Ascension Axis Support Housing we
started cutting out and assembling the components that make up the
Front and Rear Face Plates. The large holes were cut out to
accommodate the bearings' base protrusions. Typically the bottom on
most hanger bearings are flat, but these unfortunately were not. Not
really an issue though. As you can see, each component is comprised of
two layers (glued and screwed) of 3/4" birch plywood with one of
the layers (inside) recessed on three sides to accept the sides and
bottom. The second layer will add weight, but adds additional strength
in one of the most critical areas of support for the telescope. As we
complete assembly please make note that the top end of the housing
will remain open to allow adjustment of the RA axis brake. A clear
removable Lexan Plexiglas plate will cover the top side. The
approximate dimensions of each layer are shown below:
Outside
Layer: 12" x 10 1/2"
Inside
Layer: 10 1/2"x 9 1/4"
