SAO 10” NEWTONIAN GUIDE SCOPE RESTORATION |

| The
ability to point a huge telescope at an unseen object takes skill and
finesse. But, with the aid of a finder, or guide scope, the challenge is
drastically reduced. I could have went with a standard 8x50 finder, but
I decided to use one of the VSC's vintage refractors of historic
significance instead. It is a Tasco Model 6TE-5 50mm f/12 refractor given
to me by my colleague Gary Barabino (pictured standing behind the scope
in the first photo above) back in the early 1980's. Actually, this was
the first true Astronomical telescope I had in my possession to perform
daily observations with. The small well-crafted telescope had seen
many-a-year of use, and was starting to show its age. So, in
commemoration of
the Vega's legacy, I decided to restore this great little refractor and
use it for my guide scope on the SAO 10" f/5.6 Newt. To go through the
restoration process with us, click on the upper left-hand thumbnail.
