Earlier in the build process of the Jaeger 6" f/10 "GJD" refractor, I
cut the main tube to proper length. Now, with the objective cell and
focuser backplate components fully complete, I will resume work on the
main tube to get it ready for final assembly. To begin this effort, I
used the rear lens cell as a template to mark the location of the
three (3) hole onto the main tube. Using the marks, I
drilled three (3) 1/16" starter holes spaced 120-degrees from one
another around the objective end of the main tube to be utilized in
preparation for attaching the objective lens cell components.
I
will increase the size of the holes in steps using progressively
larger diameter drills bit until I reach the final size of 1/4" for
each of the three holes. I figure three drill bit size increases will
do the trick. This process reduces wandering of the bit during
drilling, and aids in guaranteeing that the holes will be accurately
cut in their precise locations.
