The first notches I will be cutting into the knife-edge baffles are
the ones for clearance pass the counterweight system epoxied nuts
located inside the "GJD" refractor's main tube. As a precaution, I
temporarily moved my operations outside of my garage on my driveway.
Reason?... Cutting these notches in the baffles with the cut-off tool
will be generating a cloud of polycarbonate dust, and it gets
everywhere. So, doing this task outside is a better choice unless you
have the ultimate shop with a sophisticated vacuum system.
Additonally, all manner of protection will be need for your eyes
(sealed goggles are preferred), hearing protection, breathing mask, as
well as hand protection in case the cutting disk breaks.
An
alternate method to grinding away the notches would have been to cut
them out on a bandsaw before the baffle rack was assembled. Perhaps I
will used this method next time. But, after I accurately assembled the
baffle rack, I just could not bring myself to dismantle it to cut out
the notches with the bandsaw. Therefore, I used the method in the
photo, which still worked beautifully. |
