In designing and cutting out the Accessory Tray for the VSC “North Star” Field Tripod, we had to consider a number factors. This is how we determined its dimensions. First, we assembled the legs and Pan-Head. Then, I evenly spread the fully retracted legs out from the Pan-Head to see how far out we wanted them to be. Next, using a rule, we determined at which height we wanted to place the Accessory tray in relation to the spread of the legs. Once the tray’s height was established, we could now measure the distance between the legs at the pre-determined height level of the Accessory Tray. This distance would then be reduced by a couple of inches to allow for clearance between the corners of the tray and angled legs. Next, we took into account that we wanted the three tips of the equilateral triangle to be trimmed off at a point whereby their width, which is perpendicular to the center of the tray, would equal the width across each legs faceplate. So when the three tips are cut off, it would render the pre-described distance between the legs on all three sides. With the dimensions calculated, I drew the triangle onto a piece of ¾” inch plywood and commenced to cutting it out. Note that we have not installed the rails, or recessed the bolt heads on the Accessory Tray on the prototype tripod. These features will be instituted in the next model and can already be found in the design diagrams.
