| If you have
visited the VSC website before, there is a great chance that you
reviewed the construction pages for the North Star I field tripod
prototype located here:
North Star I Prototype Field Tripod Construction
Pages. It was built as a replacement to Gary Barabino's
ill fated tripod for his old Konus 8" f/5 Newt. Well, as fortified as
the NS I field tripod was, an even better one was created. I call it the
North Star II Filed Tripod, for which I will provide a construction
overview here in. The photo above shows the panhead templates for both tripods; with the new North Star II's on the left. As you can see, the new tripod is significantly smaller and more refined than the older NS I's. Though smaller, the panhead that it will produce will be just as strong as the larger older one. The esthetics will be better too! Both were designed to enable the tripod panhead to accept any equatorial head with a mount hub the same size as a standard CG-5, or Orion Atlas, etc. For design diagrams of the North Star II field tripod's panhead, please click on the following links below: Panhead Design (Opaque) Panhead Design (X-Ray)
