North Star II Field Tripod Construction - Legs Cut and Edges Rounded 1

The NS II legs being cut and trimmed... (Click for enlarged view)

As with the legs of the North Star I prototype field tripod, the legs of NS II will also be made from inexpensive 2"x2" hard pine stakes carefully selected from the many warped pieces that are common in the batches at the home improvement store of choice. Nine were needed to make the legs, at a cost of only $1.19 each plus tax.

Each leg is comprised of two outer 2"x2" stakes and one adjustable center 2"x2" stake. All stakes for this tripod were cut to the same length; both outer main leg supports and adjustable center legs. For esthetics and protection from sharp edges, the corners of all of the stakes were rounded over with my laminate trimmer using a 1/4" radius round-over bit. Plenty of sand dust produced, as you can see!
